What type of distress flares and how many should I carry?
- Inshore Flare Pack – for vessels up to 3 miles from shore or safe haven should carry a minimum of 2 red hand held flares and 2 orange hand smoke flares.
- Coastal Flare Pack - If sailing for the day in the Coastal Zone which is up to 7 miles from shore or safe haven then you would need to carry 2 red hand held flares, 2 red parachute rocket flares and 2 orange hand smoke flares
- If you are sailing at night or in fog, it is best to carry a few white hand flares to signal the position of your boat to avoid potential collisions.
- If sailing in an Offshore area being over 7 miles from shore or safe haven then carry 4 red hand held flares, 4 red parachute rocket flares and 2 buoyant orange smoke flares.
Always make sure you instruct all the crew in the use of emergency distress flares.
Keep gloves near your flare pack – red hand flares burn at 2000 degrees!
